Summer Slaughter Tour 2008

Sunday night saw the arrival of the behemoth that is the Summer Slaughter Tour. Traversing several continents with several alternative line-ups the tour sees some of the ‘core’ scene’s rising stars travelling the world.

Get In The Pit

This has got to have been one of the most exciting, enjoyable and yet challenging shoots I have undertaken to date. From the get go, the dry ice / smoke machine was in full swing and let up about as much as each of the acts did.

The press pit was scarecly empty. Always a good thing as it means that you are either a) Ahead of the curve in knowing who are about to break into cult status or b) there is a big hitter playing somewhere else and all your competition is elsewhere.

Tonight is option a. Just myself and new found friend Ashley Maile who is covering the show for Kerrang magazine. We enjoy chit chat between sets and flicking through what each other has taken.

I have not really kept up with the metalcore scene of late and was amazed at the massive size of the crowd – good crowds always mean good shows, bands tend to work that little extra.

I used my 24-70mm Sigma all the way through, having to clean off the lens after a rather wet set list from As Blood Runs Black who were the highlight of the night for me. They were intense, very active on stage and up for a laugh with guitarist Ernie regularly posing for me. Talking to Ernie after the show he said that he never knows what to do when people are taking pictures of him so he acts up – I hope he keeps doing it, he was a legend.

The main attraction of the evening are Suicide Silence. Destined to become one of the most talked about bands of 2009 without a question, these guys are intense. Mitch Lucker scowls the stage swooping his arms like a bat on the hunt for fresh blood. His vocal range is out of this world dragging the depths of hell before punishing your ear holes with extreme screams.
