It feels like The Mirimar Disaster have been on the road for years. One of my favourite acts around at the moment I first witnessed their powerful stage performance, supporting Will Haven, shortly after the departure - or exiling of their lead vocalist.
Tonight sees the band return to the same venue for the first time in over a year this time as champions headlining their own 10 date tour which finished up at The Freebutt in Brighton.
New EP Verses shows the new direction of the band, fast, riff-tastic, and thick in raw energy.
Get In The Pit
The Freebutt is one of those venues that you grow up with and is very much part of Brighton culture. It was once a tiny space where having 50 punters through the door classified as sold out. After being refurbished last year by the team behind Southampton’s The Joiners, it can hold a few more.
The main problem is the quirky stage arrangement and a rather obtrusive pillar which sits smack bang in front of centre stage with barely 2ft clearance.
The venue also uses the more recent LED based lights, this is down to power consumption, limited space and the fact that the ceiling is only 10ft high off the stage. The LED’s provide a nice colourisation to shows but do not produce strong beams of light so it can be quite hard to get nice saturated images.
As always I have used my 24-70mm Sigma, ranging between f4.5 at around 1/8 to f2.8 at 1/8-1/15.
Strobist Info
The lead photo in this set which sees the front man mid air was taken using an SB600 off camera with the wireless settings which are part of Nikon’s CLS.
Holding The SB600 to my left my arm fully extended pointing back at the subject, you can see it has created a pretty stunning effect! Pushing the light back into the subject from the side means that I have retained a small amount of the ambient light but also not caused the subject to blow out from the light being direct.
