Behind The Scenes:

Lighting test – high strobes

Testing Silver Brolly

Possibly the first self-portrait I have ever posted. This is another Adventure in Flash, preparing for tomorrows shoot with Brighton Metalcore demons Here There Be Monsters.

I have a very specific lighting style in mind which suits the location scouted out earlier this week. On the shoot I will be using Nikon Speedlights as we are out and about, I will be working alone and.. well we may not strictly be somewhere we should, so lightweight and fast to setup/down is of the essence.

In this image I have setup a light stand approx 3ft away and 7ft high. On the end of this stand is a 24″ silver reflector umbrella, which I bought from jackthehat.co.uk, they are amazingly cheap and have excellent customer service.

The SB800 is firing into the umbrella with the zoom head set to its widest without the diffuser attached, this is to ensure the brolly is filled with light which is set to 1/8 power.

Shooting with my Nikon D80 @ ISO100 1/30 f2.8, the height and direct angle of the strobe (pointing straight down) causes a heavy shadow on the opposite side of the face.

This wont work as well in a group shoot scenario but will work excellent on the individual headshots.
