The Great Escape 2009

mutiny-2

Another May, another Brighton Festival and the third (citation req) The Great Escape. This year I did not get a press pass, overlooked by the organisers for some of my fellow togs, and not wishing to follow up with any publications to stand in rain and queues for three days.

I did however get a message from Mr Big Scary Monsters to ask about covering the label showcase at the Hobgoblin on the Saturday which I duly accepted.

Nothing seemed to go to plan however. After a heavy night with Pete & The Test Tube Babies, the pub wasn’t open at 3. From what I gather when the bands turned up at 2, there wasn’t even anyone in the building.

There weren’t enough mic’s, they’ve moved the stage to the opposite side of the room, headlines This Town Needs Guns, had pulled out earlier in the morning and by 4pm we still hadn’t seen a band.Things didn’t get much better sadly, and after a spectacular performance by Mutiny On The Bounty, who were incredible, there was yet more waiting and hanging around whilst the lowly sound guy tried to work out how to accomodate Crowns on the Rats Orchestra, featuring x-members of Meet Me In St Louis. I watched their set before rather reluctantly making my leave before watching Blakfish, who I really wanted to see.

Too many people, not enough floor.
