Following the release of their latest monolith Eternal Kingdom, Cult of Luna are touring the UK, Monday 30th June saw them headlining at the Concorde2 in Brighton with support from Devil Sold His Soul and Brighton based The Deal Was For The Diamond.
One of the longest sets I have witnessed in recent years (understandably based on the average track time coming in around 8 minutes), Cult of Luna performed an intense, fiercely tight set.
From the Photo Pit
As with the supporting act, London’s Devil Sold His Soul, one of the hardest aspects of shooting the band was the excessive use of smoke machines. Using flash against smoke causes some rather nasty results as the light bounces back off the smoke particles causing some rather nasty cloudy, over exposed looking shots.
To compensate for this, I dropped the the power of my Nikon SB600 flash unit down to -2EV and 1/16.
Nearing the end of the set I dabbled with not using the flash opting for an ISO1600 setting and a slower than is adequate shutter speed of 1/16. With a bit of breath holding and hope, some of the latter shots came out quite effective, the grain mixed with the smoke accurately reflects the sombre and dark sound that Cult of Luna are famed for.
