Well there have been some interesting to put it politely developments with drownedinsound.com since I started giving them photographs for review back in 2006, sadly it has all come to a head (of sorts) today with an official statement to DiS readers:
“As many of you know, last year DrownedinSound.com signed a deal with BSkyB to support the expansion DiS and to create some new websites.
A key premise of this deal was that these new sites, alongside DiS, would support the music editorial on Sky’s portal and provide distinctive voices for different audiences, both niche and mainstream.
However, as of today, and following lengthy discussions between Sky and DiS, the decision has been made to end the joint venture partnership between Sky and DiS. This decision was based on a change in the online ambitions for both Sky and DiS. Following these changes to both Sky’s and DiS’ strategic focus, it was felt that the joint venture was not able to deliver the anticipated value to either party.”
Mail has been flying around all day and several key members have sadly either been made to walk ye plank or jumped ship, it is unclear.
So what happens next? well it would seem the intention is to keep the site going with three sheets to the wind and push it more towards the already amassed community which is the backbone of its readership.
Alas this does mean the loss of Chief Editor Mike Diver, the man who gave me a chance all those years ago (OK 2 but still..)
But who knows what lies across the horizon for the UK’s Pitchfork bastard child (more on that soon).
