Cast The Bones

Cast The Bones (9 of 37)

Gary Shoutface ‘ooh did I just shit in your cereal’?

Saturday was probably one of the busiest photographic days I have had in over a year.

During the day I was enjoying the varied delights at Loop festival, more of which can be seen on the Flickr Stream.

The evening saw the somewhat triumphant return of Cast The Bones, Brightons most baddest raddest metallers.

After a fairly lenghty hiatus, a rather extreme line up change and the addition of even more hair than before the war horse returned to the hallowed stage of Brightons Freebutt.

Support came from another Stallion from Brighton’s metal stable, Synbiote. Again showing incredible form, slightly less hair but just as much bang for your buck.

Tips from the pit

The weekend also provided me with my first proper chance to truly play with the knowledge I had learnt from the Dark Daze studio lighting course.

And I have to say I think that I have nailed how to get the best out of the Freebutt, it’s 5ft deep stage, 8ft high ceiling and rather quirky placed pillar.

EXIF data can be found on each photo via the Flickr stream but to save some time here is a summary.

All shots were taken with ISO 200, and predominantly on f2.8.
I started out with the shutter speed set to 1/125 (the sync speed for SB600 flashes) and turned the flashes power up and down until I found a good exposure point.

I then started to slow the shutter down to get lots of light traces from the band members flowing locks giving these shots some seriously exciting angles.

Of course the downside to these sort of ‘artistic’ shots is that a publication will never take them as magazines don’t dig light trails.
