Max Cavalera - Soulfly

Max Cavalera brought the Soulfly tribe to Brighton Concorde2, and there is plenty of fight in the old dog yet.

Constantly written off year in year out by fanboys, and critics alike, wishing for a Sepultura reunion that will never materialise (despite this years Cavalera Conspiracy project). Soulfly have become just as much of the history of thrash metal as the likes of Machine Head, Metallica, Slayer and the aformentioned Sepultura.

Blasting through a mixed bag set new tracks from soon to be realased album number 4 Conquoror, Paranoia and Doom are received by the sweat laden crowd as well as classics Eye for an Eye, Seek and Strike and Sepultura favourite Chaos AD.

Tour support came from UK rising stars Malefice who are really whipping up a storm in the media at the moment, but failed to really impress on this occasion despite my witnessing a kid being carried out by security in an unconscious state.

Get In The Pit

It is not uncommon for support bands to get a rough ride when touring with the more commercially successful acts. The chances are, they will only get 1/3rd of the channels on the mixing desk, a limited sound check, but more importantly for photographers virtually none of the stage.

In venues with limited back stage access and space, more often than not the headline acts will want to leave their entire back line set up on stage. This means that each band that proceeds them will have less and less space like a Russian doll effect.

Getting The Right Space

There isn’t much you can do in these situations and even less if you didn’t bring the right gear. Ideally try to make sure you always have a short lens with you, I always use a 24-70mm Sigma as my bread and butter lens for this exact reason. There are also some fantastic 18-50mm lenses out there which will get you out of of those confined tricky spots!
